What is Port Mapper ?
Port Mapper is a lightweight Windows application that securely manages
the ports on your Home Networking Router. It effectively
cuts down on the time spent by you in configuring and monitoring
your home router. It works to automatically map the ports opened
to the router while you are still playing a game or running any
web-based application.
Who can make best use of Port
Mapper ?
Port Mapper is best for people who enjoy playing online and actively
participate in multi-player games and are connected to the Internet
through a router. It can also be used by those who wish to expose
their application to the Internet while at home.
What's wrong in manually
handling ports on router ?
Ports can be handled manually, of course, but if they are not deleted
or shut down, they can open the doors to some firewall-related problems.
Which means that you will need to remember to shut down all the
ports that were opened by you manually or else your system will
remain open to the Internet and to security threats.
What exactly happens when
Port Mapper is running ?
The moment Port Mapper is activated, it begins to monitor the sytem
processes. Whenever any application tries to open a communication
port on your system, Port Mapper detects it with the help of a Windows
function. Before the actual mapping, a popup window appears to ask
for confirmation of whether you wish to map it to the router or
not. If the port is mapped, the system is ready to communicate with
the Internet through that application. If not, the port opening
request is just rejected.
Can Port Mapper affect my PC?
Port Mapper uses Windows system functions. In all of its processes,
Port Mapper does not modify your registry entries nor does it tamper
with your system files.
Which Operating System(s)
do you support ?
Port Mapper supports all Operating Systems above Windows NT. However,
it does not support Linux based systems.
What routers do you support?
Port Mapper supports major versions of Linksys, Netgear and D-Link.
The HomeNetMagic team will continue to add more names to this list.
Please find the updated list in the Supported
Router section.
How do I install Port
Mapper ?
Installing Port Mapper is very simple. Unzip the downloaded file
to the desired location or folder on your system, for example c:/program
files. Now start the Port Mapper application present in the folder
HomeNetMagic/Port Mapper.
Why do I get 'authentication
failed' screen ?
When the username and password you supply, do not match your router,
it can generate the 'Incorrect credentials' error and show you the
'Authentication Failed' screen.
You can use the default username and password given by your manufacturer,
if you have not changed it since you bought the router. In case,
you are unable to get the default username and password, then you
can mail us the router firmware version and the router model at
support@homenetmagic.com and we will send you the default user name
and password for your router.
You may need to contact your Internet Service Provider if the user
name and password are set by them.
If you have changed the username and password on the router and
do not remember the same, you can reset it to default username and
password by using the button provided in your router. You will also
find more information on the same in the manual provided by the
router manufacturer.
How can I upgrade Port
Mapper to the most recent version?
You can instantly upgrade Port Mapper with a right click on the
Port Mapper Icon in the task bar and selecting 'Upgrade'. Port Mapper
automatically upgrades your copy to the latest version.
